Teaching a dog to shake

Uncategorized

It’s early August. I know it doesn’t feel warm but having your dog shake water all over you isn’t really the worse thing that can happen. On a January day, when it’s -2 C and you just can’t get properly warm then it’s a different matter.

It’s a simple matter to teach a dog the shake command, after all, they shake naturally so all we need to do is put that onto a command. As your dog gets out of the water stop him or her using a whistle. As they start to shake themselves dry add a command. Tell them to ‘Shake’. Repeat this as often as you need to. But as with anything training related please don’t be afraid to take a step backwards if you need to.

Once you got a dog used to that, try using the command before a dog shakes water off for itself. If you’ve taken your time over doing this then they’ll do every time and you’ll be dry in all weathers (assuming decent clothes)

Simple or as simple as anything ever is with dogs.
