You’re picking up your new puppy and bubbling over with excitement. It’s such a great feeling. But how do you introduce them to your older established dog? Its a problem many of us are lucky enough to face.
Most dogs will cut a new puppy some slack, simply by virtue of their age, but it’s still important that we introduce them properly. There may well be times where our existing dogs look to us for some help on occasion., Its important that we recognise these signs and act to prevent them escalating. It will also help for our older dog to realise they’re still as important to us as they every were.
Bringing your new puppy home.
When you bring your puppy home for the first time, it’s important they arrive to an empty house. Get a friend to take them for a walk as you’re about to get home. Let them come home to find the new pup & not the other way around.
Use a playpen.
As well as giving you space from your new puppy and giving them a safe space then a play pen can give your existing dog a break as well.
Remember
At times your existing dog will look for you to help. Make sure you’re there to give it. Don’t be scared to stop in and move your puppy away.
At times, your existing dog may need to tell your puppy off.As long as that doesn’t become physical than let them.
Everything
Remember, as exciting as it is brining a new puppy home is to consider and help your existing dog out. When he asks you for help, don’t be scared to give it. You’ll never stop him looking at you like this was all a bad joke though.
