There’s little more frustrating then a dog who chases uncontrollably while you want to go home, its dangerous if they do it near a road (for example) and often, if our pet gun dog has gone self employed and is making their own entertainment they’ll often do so by not recalling but stopping a short distance away and playing with yo

Recall needs to be fun.

Often, we only recall our dogs when the walk is over. Or when they’re in trouble. Neither of those is a very positive. Try recalling your dog, give them some love and then send them on their way. That way you turn recall Into a win/win. When you need your dog to come back that way they will.

Put recall onto a whistle.

Take the emotion out of recall.Use a whistle (three pips) to command recall as well as taking all the emotion away, you’ll cut through all the noise and get a better response.

Be a happy place

Make yourself attractive to your dog. No matter how you feel then make yourself attractive. Get down low, spread your arms and be silly. Walk away and remember you can’t be to silly/

Start young

You’re a puppy’s world. Use that to get them in the habit of coming back to you.

Use a long line.

If you need your confidence building in your recall skills then, for now, use a long lead until that confidence is there.

The Pet gundog and recall

By definition, gun dogs have excellent recall. On occasion though they make their own entertainment. Often they’ll think it fun to stay just out of reach of you. The short answer to that is to book a lesson or two and let me show you how to provide that productive entertainment for them instead.
